When you hear about the history of Scouting, the names of Lord
Baden-Powell and Brownsea Island and William D. Boyce and the Lone Scout are
the most popular stories that are often shared.
Not as popular, but just as instrumental in the development of the Boy
Scouts of America are Ernest Thompson Seton and his Woodland Indians and Daniel
Carter Beard with the Sons of Daniel Boone.
Another founder not often spoke about is James E. West. James E. West was the first Chief Scout
Executive of the Boy Scouts of America and held this position for 32
years. As a lawyer and administrator of
the scouting movement,he helped to oversee many marketing and strategic
developments which lead to scouting as we know it today.
The James E. West Fellowship Award is an often misunderstood
award. This award is received due to a
donation of $1,000.00 or more to the James E. West Endowment fund. This donation can be donated by an
individual, or by an individual scouter or a group of scouters in honor of or in
memory of another scouter.
James E. West believed that an institution is “lengthened
shadow of one man.” This
endowment
provides scouting with a financial backing to offer the high quality programs
to the youth of America. The principle
is never touched any and all monies used from an endowment can only come from
the interest earned, thus assuring that the council will always have money available
to continue.
