Karl Gregory started in the Boy Scouts of America in Longs Peak Councils, Troop 750 in Boulder Colorado. His Troop met at the 1st Congregational church in Boulder. He recalls that the Troop was very active with backpacking and winter camping. One of his fondest memories of this troop was the annual Klondike Derby. They would built a sled and run it through a trail that had several stopping point where the scouts would demonstrate skills such as fire building, first aid, knot tying, etc.
Karl also remembers attending the Red Feather Lakes Scout Camp in Northern Colorado every summer for a week 4-5 years. In 1973 he attended the National Jamboree in Farragut State Park in Idaho. Karl also took a trip to the Charles L. Sommers BSA camp in Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA).
Karl was active in his troop and the Order of the Arrow until high school. He attained his Star Scout Rank within the troop and his love for the camping and high adventure aspects of Scouting turned his attention to local Explorer Post 78. Post 78 was known as a High Adventure Post where the focus was on planning and organizing trips. Some of the trips they organized were to Boundary Waters and backpacking the Grand Canyon. These opportunities provided a way to test his physical strength and push him to his limits.
Working with others was another skill that Karl is thankful he picked up in the scouting organization. Working in the legal system it is important to be able to work with those whom you like and those who you do not like. Learning to work and deal with others under different circumstances and been a skill that carries throughout life.
Karl has a lot of respect for those who still volunteer with the Scouting organization. The Scouting organization went through several changes in the 80’s and many of the core values and traditions are still predominant. Karl has a great respect for those who volunteer with keeping these tradition and values alive.
